  • A bit of entertainment with our Tuesday Night Show performer, Grammy Award-winner Kelly Clarkson.
We’ve recommended a schedule that takes advantage of all of the learning at this conference, but will also ensure that you return to your office more energized for the future and more prepared to take on a leadership role than ever before.

Concurrent Session

1.25 General Recertification Credit Hours
Competencies: HR Technical Expertise & Practice; Global & Cultural Effectiveness; Consultation

Workplace Application: This session will show you how hire the right people for the right job with the right skills.
In an increasingly competitive marketplace, businesses cannot afford to carry any additional weight that doesn't help them succeed. So how does having a diverse workforce further a company's goals? A diverse workforce can provide tangible benefits to a company besides just fulfilling legal compliance and good faith efforts. In fact, as markets expand globally being able to understand and reach out to the individual needs of people from other cultures and regions will be paramount. Learn the interviewing and hiring process in five steps:
  1. Understanding the organization's culture;
  2. Conducting a job analysis;
  3. Developing behavior-based interview questions;
  4. Recruitment strategies; and
  5. Interviewing and selection.
Presenter: Melvin Brown II, president, MC Brown & Associates, LLC, Manassas, Va.

8:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.

Dan Pink is the author of four provocative books about the changing world of work, including the long-running New York Times best seller, A Whole New Mind, and the #1 New York Times best seller, Drive.

Using over 50 years of behavioral science, Pink will overturn what you may think about human motivation. Pink shows that traditional motivators, such as the carrot and the stick, may not work as well as we've always thought. You'll learn that your high performance, and that of the people around you, depends much more on the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to be in charge of our own learning and creativity, and to do better by ourselves and the world.

Competencies: HR Technical Expertise & Practice; Critical Evaluation

Workplace Application: This session will help you better understand health care reform and how to aid your employees by educating them on available benefits options, and how to customize options to meet their needs.

Many employers are moving away from the traditionally defined benefits approach to a newer defined contribution model where employees are given a lump sum of money to purchase health benefits customized to fit their needs. This shift requires greater education for all parties on available benefits options to prepare someone for the unexpected. This session will help you understand the shift towards a defined contribution approach to health benefits and how it can be a positive move for both you and your employees.

On January 8, 2011, Captain Mark Kelly would face the toughest challenge of his life when an assassination attempt was made on his wife, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. His dedication to family and Giffords' recovery captivated and inspired us.

For Kelly, focus equals success – even in the face of adversity. Personifying the best of the American spirit, Kelly is a homegrown hero who was a combat pilot in Iraq, an astronaut on four space shuttle missions and commander of the final flight of space shuttle Endeavour. He has combined teamwork, leadership, communication and family in an unwavering commitment to succeed. Kelly shows audiences how to accomplish their mission while maintaining the love and devotion to family that is the foundation of true success.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will make a special guest appearance following Kelly’s keynote to take questions that have been submitted by our members. We invite you to submit your own question for this indomitable pair by emailing us at becomingmore@shrm.org or using the hashtag #askmarkandgabby on Twitter.
