Instead, you should use questioning strategies that researchers have found make it difficult for liars to maintain their deception. In this presentation, you will learn how to ask witnesses to (1) provide a free narrative, (2) draw the event they described, (3) tell their story in reverse order, (4) answer relevant but unexpected questions, and (5) answer questions related to time, space, or the five senses. You’ll learn how use of these questioning strategies will greatly improve your ability to determine who is being truthful, even in “he said/she said” cases.
Implementing a new HR technology system can be one of the most high profile and impactful projects in which an HR practitioner can be involved, with the potential to impact strategies and processes throughout the organization. However, the opportunities typically don’t come along often and most practitioners may only be involved in one only once or twice in their careers, if that. So if given the opportunity to lead an implementation, many may not know what’s involved, where to begin, or the challenges they may face. This presentation will discuss just that – what to expect, the myths vs. the realities of implementation, and lessons learned along the way, on both the company and vendor side.

Welcome to the second full day of presentations at the Smart Stage. Want to get a glimpse of the topics that will be covered today? Come by and get a quick overview of what to expect today on the Smart Stage!
Work has been defined in many ways over the years: a contract, a transaction, a value exchange. This led to describing humans as capital and designing systems of management that treat people like financial assets. Is it any wonder that employees’ feeling of engagement within these organizations continues to drop? It doesn’t feel good to be treated like an investment to be maximized. To reverse this trend requires that we understand what work is for employees, a relationship, and a critically important one. Research has shown us that employees crave the same things from work that they do from other important relationships in their lives: appreciation, connection, acceptance, communication, and support. This presentation will explore how viewing the employee work experience through the lens of a relationship will focus your employee engagement efforts for greater impact.
This presentation will show you why the empathetic manager is the secret source to maximizing the engagement of employees. Because employee engagement is not linear (we all have good and bad days), one's engagement is often predicated by what happens AFTER work. While engagement is often seen as a top-down process driven by organizational management, learn why tomorrow's organizations need to foster improved relations between the manager and employee. This presentation will show you why empathy is a critical competency for tomorrow's manager and leader and will provide seven motivational drivers as well as how to use them to guide development and growth. You will leave with practical tools to coach employees on personal engagement, an investment in both the individual and the organization.
Are performance reviews a dinosaur that has simply refused to die? Or, do they continue to serve a practical, useful function within the workplace? This presentation will take a look at the evolving culture and workforce dynamics that force a new, thoughtful approach to performance conversations.
The workplace and marketplace are culturally diverse and multigenerational, and companies must adapt and welcome change in order to evolve and grow. The influence of this Cultural Demographic Shift™ (CDS) is that growth strategies are becoming less about the business defining the individual and more about the individual defining the business. This presentation will help you:
- Understand that without strategy, change is merely substitution not evolution and companies need new strategies for success: the old ways of doing business don’t apply any more.
- Find like-mindedness in people through their differences by steering away from assimilating people’s differences (melting pot) and towards honoring those differences (mosaic).
- See the CDS, not as a cost center, but as profit centers (investments) that drive influence in the workplace and growth in the marketplace.
- Move people to the center of your growth strategies.

Data analysis has infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives. We use data to impact the decisions we make around allocating employee’s time and attention, we use it to manage the ways employees interact, and we use it to steer things like candidate and customer experience. With the ability to collect, dissect and measure, we are now able to provide insights that were not previously visible. With the desire to actively use data to produce better results on all fronts, the issue becomes being able to contextualize that data. The ability to use HR technology solutions to prevent drowning in the sheer amount of data is critical. We need to be able to do that by asking what companies are doing with the data, why it’s important now, and what is changing. This presentation will help show you how.
No two employees are alike, so how do you effectively manage your staff and drive up employee engagement while staying as productive as possible? There has been a seismic shift in the way executives think about people, culture and workplace practices. They have come to understand that exceptional “People” leadership and systems are levers of operational and financial excellence. As a result, there is growing recognition that the background, skills and competencies of the CPO position are vital components to the success of the business as a whole, and that an alarmingly high percentage of current HR/People leaders do not possess what it takes to lead their companies in the future. Companies require –and deserve –a highly evolved set of skills and competencies from their human capital leaders. This presentation will share the top 10 traits that Chief People Officers must possess to lead their organizations into the future. The CPO who embodies these 10 competencies has the power to change the trajectory of a company and its performance. The future of work demands this level of skill and ability.
