Talent activation is a new way of thinking about talent management that focuses on deliberately connecting the experiences, processes, and metrics that create a productive and loyal workforce. It involves all company stakeholders to promote a strong experience across the employee lifecycle, transcending traditional HR disciplines and integrating day-to-day work into big picture company strategy.
Last year’s Career Advisory Board talent activation survey (discussed in a session at SHRM National in Chicago) asked HR directors how they were activating talent and creating specific employee experiences at the recruitment, onboarding, learning, and performance stages – and how they were using technology to facilitate coordinated activities.
Our SHRM audience noted that our brand of talent activation put a lot of onus on the employer. It wanted to know: what role do employees play in activating themselves? Uncovering this answer was the purpose of our 2019 survey, Talent Activation 2.0. In this session, we will cover and discuss the survey results and describe the actions most effective in empowering employees to undertake professional growth and achieve meaning in their everyday work lives.

The workplace of the future has common themes, and your selection and screening process must align with that elusive concept of “job fit”. The interviewing process is very similar to dating – both parties are often not telling the truth. With the debate ongoing about hidden bias and challenges with the design of application work flow, how can we ask effective questions? In direct and occasionally humorous terms, this presentation will make the case for three simple, direct questions that get to the heart of those issues.
- Do you have values that include a work ethic?
- Do you have a “victim” mentality?
- Are you flexible and adaptable?
Come learn how these questions can uncover these truths and use them to do a better job of screening.
From the very early news stories that launched the #MeToo movement through the reports that followed, a common narrative began to emerge: that harassment victims had complained to HR and “nothing happened.” As HR knows well, maintaining confidentiality is critical when handling highly sensitive issues like harassment; however, transparency is also important for demonstrating accountability, earning trust and preserving culture. While there is no simple solution to this challenge, this presentation will provide some tips for how an organization can move the needle on transparency and, by doing so, demonstrate its commitment to a culture that is hostile to harassment.
Can you have fun while learning? Can you meet life-life professional friends by belonging and participating in a local SHRM chapter? Can you learn cutting edge business ideas to take back and implement at work making you a ROCK STAR? All of these, and so much more, can lead to career changing experiences.
